Berniece Margaret
Halliday, age 93, of Cedarstone Enhanced Care, in
Truro, NS, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2019.
Born in Rose, NS, she was the second
daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Mitchell)
Halliday.
At the age of 15, Berniece was one of
the youngest Nova Scotians to write the Grade 12 school exams and to
be accepted to Provincial Teacher's College.
A graduate of the Provincial Teacher's
College and Mount Allison University (BA'61, BEd'62), she spent the
first nine years of her teaching career in the schools of her native
Cumberland County. Following a period of employment in
Amherst, she taught three years in Montreal, and returned to Nova
Scotia to teach for 35 years in Halifax, first in Morris Street, later
Tower Road Annex, and secondly in Tower Road, where she had been a
first grade teacher since 1974. After 47 years as a teacher,
she retired in 1990. Many students and their parents will
remember Miss Halliday as their favorite teacher.
She was a member of St. Matthew Church
in Halifax and adherent of Millvale United Church.
In her leisure time, Berniece has many
interests. She had many memorable vacations within Canada,
United States and Europe. She regularly attended Symphony
Nova Scotia concerts and plays at Neptune Theatre. She loved
gardening, especially growing roses. She enjoyed
calligraphy, knitting, needle point, tole painting and
smocking. Many of her finished products were given to her
family and friends. Berniece relished a good book and was an
avid reader of poetry, biographies and historical
novels.
She is survived by sisters Inez Halliday
and Vera (Max) Brown of Truro, Shirley (William) Cox, South Branch;
niece Heidi Brown, Dartmouth, nephew Scott (Nancy) Brown, Truro
Heights and step great niece Kristen MacPhee.
She was predeceased by sisters Ina Mae
in infancy and Beryl and brother Raymond.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the
care of W. Allen Funeral Home,
60 Water St., Oxford, NS (902-447-2167), where visiting hours will
take place on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 from Noon to 2 pm, followed
immediately at 2 pm by her funeral service, Rev. Marion Lloy
officiating. Following a reception, her remains will be
interred in the Rose Cemetery.
